The Village of 45 Kasbahs: A Deep Dive Walking Tour of N’kob
When you travel through Southern Morocco, you see many villages, but few have the architectural prestige of N’kob. Known famously as the “Village of 45 Kasbahs,” N’kob is a living museum of Berber history.
While many travelers just drive through, the real magic happens when you step out of the car. Our guided walking tour offers an immersive look into the history, agriculture, and daily life of the Ait Atta tribe.
The Architecture: Why 45 Kasbahs?
A Kasbah is a fortified house, traditionally built with adobe (mud brick) and straw. In most villages, you might find one or two ancient Kasbahs belonging to the ruling family. N’kob is unique because it boasts forty-five of them.
On our walking tour, we navigate the labyrinth of the old town. You will learn how these structures keep the interior cool during the scorching summer and warm during the winter. We will point out the intricate geometric decorations on the towers and explain the restoration efforts keeping this heritage alive.
The Lifeline of the Desert: The Oasis & Khettaras
How does a village survive in the pre-Sahara? The answer lies in the Oasis. Our walk takes you from the dusty streets into the lush greenery of the palm groves.
Here, you will witness the genius of the Khettara system. These are ancient underground canals used for irrigation. Unlike open-air canals where water evaporates in the sun, Khettaras transport water underground from the source to the fields. You will see how the water is divided among families—a system based on trust and community that has worked for centuries.
Authentic Hospitality: Tea & Henna
A tour of N’kob isn’t just about looking at buildings; it’s about meeting people. We believe the best way to understand Morocco is over a glass of tea.
We will take a break at a local family home. Sitting on traditional rugs, you will watch the ritual of making Moroccan mint tea (often called “Berber Whiskey”). It is a time to relax, ask questions about local life, and share stories.
- Henna Experience: For guests interested in beauty and tradition, we can arrange for a local Henna artist to apply traditional intricate designs to your hands—a symbol of good luck and joy in Moroccan culture.
